Students at Summit Leadership Academy try out the fire hose

  • This issue was a nightmare to put out: Our network connection was going nuts all week, and became essentially non-functional on Friday. Since all of our page, photo and story data is transmitted to the Daily Press in Victorville via this connection, and some of the assets used to assemble the pages are stored on servers in Victorville to begin with, this was bad, bad, bad news. The 11th hour arrival of two very competent Verizon engineers saved the day and our sanity.
  • They run a tight ship in the Hesperia Unified School District. Every time I input the the school police log (not available on the Web this week), I’m struck by how many of these kids are doing the same things I did at their age, or younger. No, I didn’t get drunk or high in school, but “evading an officer?” You betcha. I’m of the opinion that there’s a natural human instinct to run from someone chasing you, particularly when said person has weapons and is not chasing at you to tell you that you’ve won the lottery. I don’t think I was a bad kid, although my mother, who met with more than her fair share of principals over the years, may disagree.
