Familiars

Not every community looks equally favorably on these creatures, with some (most notably black cats in communities of fundamentalist Lothian-worshippers) being viewed as creatures of evil.


In addition to the familiars detailed in the Players Handbook, and the familiars available to smaller characters in the DMG, choices from Stormwrack and Frostburn are also available in the appropriate environment.

Midwood wizards and sorcerers can also choose from the following additional familiar types:

  • Box turtles grant their masters a +1 bonus to Natural Armor.
  • Chipmunks grant their masters +10 feet to their base speed.
  • Deer mice grant their masters a +3 bonus on all Survival checks.
  • Fox grant their masters a +3 on Move Silently checks.
  • Raccoons grant their master a +3 bonus on all Sleight of Hand checks.
  • Squirrels grant their master a +3 bonus on all Climb checks.

Player character familiars receive maximum hit points for a creature of their type.

Sorcerers from Foxton on Moss whose mothers had a fox dream prior to their birth receive a fox familiar at 2nd level if they have not acquired one prior to then. Where the familiar came from, they do not know ... at first.

All wizards and sorcerers get their first familiar for free, if they choose to acquire one.
