Middleborough

From Praemal

The oldest community in Midwood, Middleborough is a small town clustered around the keep of Midwood Hall and the Hartwood that forms its fringe. As the capital of the barony, the town has larger and more impressive buildings than one might normally expect.

Geography

The Moss River winds through the small town of Middleborough, powering the mill's water wheel. The river grows wider and a bit slower as it flows into Middleborough, allowing the residents to float timber and other goods for shipping to the lowlands, although they must be removed from the river and taken down Hangman's Pass by pack animal before the river plunges off the side of the Anvil Plateau.

The Baron's Road leads east and west through town, heading to Foxton on Moss in the west and Hangman's Pass in the east. It is paved in both directions, although the paving peters out before reaching the pass. In Middleborough itself, though, well-worn cobbles line every official street.

Residents

The town is a bustling one, with merchants from the lowlands haggling with those trading apples, wool or timber from the barony. The community is also regularly visited by dwarves from the north, as the community is the current home of Thrushbeard, king-in-exile of Glangirn, the dwarfhold in Green Mountain conquered 500 years ago by the green dragon Gax.

Under the influence of Baron Nicodemus Midwood, more and more booksellers have begun opening shop in Middleborough, and the own is gradually getting a reputation on the Prustan Peninsula as one of the foremost locations for second-hand book sales in the region. The baron's birthday on Moons 9 is celebrated with book-readings in town, including presentations by famous authors and actors from as far away as Tarsis.

Residents of Middleborough often have Middleborough or Wood as a surname.
