Midwood Hall

From Praemal

The oldest structure in the barony, ivy-covered Midwood Hall is the castle of Baron Nicodemus Midwood and the base of baronal power.

A small keep surrounded on three sides by the Hartwood and the small town of Middleborough around that, Midwood Hall is perched on a small hill and surrounded by ancient trees and outlying buildings, including Midwood Farm. Its front gate is guarded by a pair of topiary lions, which echo the Lion-Guarded Throne of the Tarsisian Empire.

The keep has not been directly attacked in hundreds of years, and as a result, it has slowly turned from a military facility into a more comfortable home. The current baron has a small wooden platform built in the adjacent hedge maze for his astronomy research.

Throne room

Although previous barons created this room as a throne room, over time, it has been adapted to the needs of a succession of rulers. The Oak Throne, carved in the shape of a spreading tree, still is located at the center of the north wall, atop a small series of stone steps. But behind it is a huge tapestry depicting Baroness Talitha Midwood praying before an altar to Lothian, with the light of her god shining upon her and, dimly depicted beyond the doors of the church in the tapestry, all her subjects. Desks line the north wall of the room, many of them covered in books and scrolls.

The south half of the room contains rows of benches, worn smooth by countless petitioners sitting in them, awaiting baronal justice, over the centuries.
