Redhurst

From Praemal

The foremost school for wizards in the world, the Redhurst Academy of Magic has taught many of the great wizards of the past 500 years.

The elf wizards Aegis and Nammor retired from the adventuring life in 225 IA and chose to settle down at the site of their last adventure, where they defeated the demon god Malificus, and erected a new castle on the site. They taught the children of kings and emperors and great heroes. During the first century of the school's existence, which the staff and alumni refer to as "The Time of Troubles," the school was a target for repeated attacks by various groups, because the castle itself is a prize, because it moves.

The castle rarely stays in one place for long, shifting from one place to another in the middle of the night. It has been known to appear at Tarsis, Dohrinthas, Freeport, Grailwarden Keep, Ptolus, Trolone and in distant Uraq. Even the alumni are not sure of all the places the castle has teleported to, as students are typically kept too busy to study life outside the walls.

Today, though, the school is mostly left alone: Five centuries of powerful wizards graduating from its halls has created a loyal force of protectors who can find any enemy, anywhere in the world.

Studying at Redhurst

Assuming applicants pass a series of rigorous admittance tests, they must find the means to pay the 2,000 gold piece a year tuition for the five year program. Recently, the current headmaster, Andarlin, has added a "tithing" system for students unable to pay their tuition fee. Graduates pay 10 percent of their future earnings to the school instead of a set fee up front.

Nearly all students specialize in a school of magic, which means they spend most of their later studies learning at one of Redhurst's eight schools: the Aegis School of Abjuration, the Bisechen School of Conjuration, the Jecture School of Divinaton, the Nammor School of Enchantment, the Wolkhart School of Evocation, the Ignes School of Illusion, the Mordant School of Necromancy and the Thaumant School of Transmutation.

Many students identify as strongly with their chosen school as they do with Redhurst itself, and will wear its colors and crest throughout their student life, although most graduates prefer to wear the ram's head crest of Redhurst or the red and yellow school colors.

Although Redhurst has some unique spells available to generalists, those who specialize and concentrate their studies within a single school are taught spells unique to Redhurst. None of these are especially powerful, especially compared to the massive catalog of spells available in the school's justifably famous library, but they are a point of pride among graduates.

Life at Redhurst isn't all serious, however: Spellflag is an absolute obsession at the school.

Wizards associated with the Redhurst Academy of Magic

In game terms, Redhurst only accepts wizards with 16 Intelligence or greater, and after five years in the school, they graduate as 3rd level wizards.

Every wizard spell in the Player's Handbook and the Complete Arcane is available in the Redhurst Library, along with an extraordinary variety of mundane books. Students also gain access to all the Redhurst spells that go along with their specialization and the few generic Redhurst spells. Non-specialized students only gain access to the generic Redhust spells. Normal rules for learning a new spell still apply.

Graduates automatically receive the Redhurst Alumni bonus feat, which gives them a +4 circumstance bonus to Diplomacy checks made against another Redhurst graduate.

Tuition is 2,000 gold a year.
