Background

The Kem family has been keeping the books for the apple orchards in Maidensbridge for over a century, since before records were even necessary. They've kept the barons happy enough, but they're not exactly known for accuracy and transparency. Accusations of graft have been made on and off over the years, each instance refuted last-minute with shaky, nebulous evidence. They also hold pretensions at wizardry, often meeting character indictments with vague threats and innuendo. Whether it was the magic or their venality in business, the Kems inspired a deep hatred in otherwise perfectly decent Bridgers.

This was the family to which Renraw Kem was born. His mother, blind and often sick, died when Renraw was very young. His father, Rogren Kem, is a cold-hearted tyrant and perhaps the most hated of all Kems, too enmeshed in his own corruption to notice young Renraw's early aptitudes with language and the sciences. His older brother Scim ran away at 15. Renraw's uncle Ronco Kem was the only person in the boy's life to show him any kindness, telling him stories of magic and instilling in him a passion for learning that his father's beatings had somehow failed to inspire. Ronco was known to take Renraw on frequent trips to The House of the Transformed Toad in Middleborough.

Things began to change when the Kemite Khenemet-Apep built his tower on Green Mountain 11 years ago. Somehow rumor began to circulate that the family surname was bogus, that they didn't hail from ancient Kem, and that they didn't even know any real magic. Rogren was humiliated, unused to being an object of derision instead of the usual hatred and fear. He disappeared when Renraw was 12.

This began a period of prosperity for the accountants of Maidensbridge. Ronco Kem assumed the family duties with the "help" of his young wife Priscilla (she did all the work) and gradually cleaned up the tangled mess his ancestors had left him. Ronco and Priscilla's amiable natures allowed them to bear the brunt of the townspeople's jokes and take them in stride, and soon over one hundred and twenty years of Kem family malfeasance was all but forgotten. Eight years ago, Ronco and Priscilla were blessed with their first child, Rando Kem, a delightful but mischievious scamp.

It wasn't long before the orchard's ledgers were completely balanced ... with one notable exception. Ronco set aside some of the family's presumably ill-gotten gains to send Renraw to college, St. Feldin's College of Abjuration, to be specific. Though still friendless and socially maladjusted, things were looking up for Renraw. Indeed, the day he left for Tarsis would be the happiest day of his life.

University was good for Renraw; he made other pretentious friends and rather reveled in his studies. He began worship of a dragon god, Io, mainly because he thought it would cause a stir back home...not because he particularly believed. In his short time there, he made barely passing marks and ran afoul of the disciplinary committee (particularly its chair, Dorian Delgath), but it is an experience he would not trade for the world.

Late in 720 IA, Ronco and Priscilla were brutally murdered. Rando Kem was able to sneak away unharmed. The perpetrators were believed to be outsiders, but the who and why baffled authorities and greatly dismayed the tiny hamlet only used to violence from the Green Mountain Kobolds.

During the investigation, what everyone had suspected but kindly kept mum about was finally uncovered ... Renraw's schooling was being financed with apple money. Officials had no choice but to ask him to return. Ronco and Priscilla had apparently done an exemplary job regaining the town's trust, however, as Renraw was allowed to make restitution for his stolen tuition by working as bookkeeper until a suitable replacement could be found.

But Renraw was terrible at accounting and despised it along with most everyone in town. Sensing the village's imminent destruction at the hands of the kobolds, Renraw arranged a meeting with Wormy, a member of the Children of Tiamat faction, to gather information and attempt to arrange protection for his friends and family. The end result was instead a charge of crimes against the empire. On his way to trial (and probable execution), his bardic friend Tock Chandler and a stranger named Stotch mounted a successful rescue, beginning Renraw's life as a fugitive.

After the escape from Maidensbridge, he adopted a new, more confident outward persona. A near-death experience while toppling over a waterfall gave him perspective on his crimes and, indeed, his entire life. Though wanted dead or alive, he had never felt freer. Over the next few weeks, this perspective would allow him to develop new ambitions that he would carry with him into the city of Freeport, his new home.

Renraw is 5'11", 170 lbs., and knobby-kneed. His dark brown hair is wavy and shoulder-length. He has taken to wearing a greasy mustache as a disguise. He used to proudly wear his St. Feldin's robes, but since he learned returning to college would be problematic at best, he has begun to dress more as a commoner in shirt and pants, more in line with his "Glinty" Rod persona. He often has his sleeves rolled up as if ready for a fight. His prized possession, a magic staff and light source, never leaves his side.

Goals

Renraw was forced to reexamine his goals upon becoming a fugitive, but the fond memories of his time at St. Feldin's foster a reluctance to abandon his more scholarly pursuits. He has expressed keen interest in Tock Chandler's desire to reach Freeport, and even keener interest in amassing a small fortune as part of some undisclosed plan for when they arrive.
