War mage

From Praemal

The Imperial Arcane Academy of War in Tarsis trained war mages for the Tarsisian Empire for 600 years prior to the current struggle for the Lion-Guarded Throne.

Most war mages, both currently serving in the Imperial army and retired, have tried to remain neutral during the current struggle for the crown, but the former head of the academy was loyal to Empress Addares XXXIV, and when her court moved to Dohrinthas, he announced the closure of the school in Tarsis (then currently besieged by the forces of the Eastern Hordes, with the intention of reopening it in Dohrinthas. An assassin -- and no one can agree whether it was a war mage, an agent of another claimant to the throne, or someone else -- ended that dream, leaving the school in Tarsis closed and without its senior staff to reopen the school.

Since then, other war mages who have seemed likely to reopen an academy serving one of the three would-be emperors have all met various grisly deaths, and few of the remaining war mages express even the slightest public interest in politics. They remain with their military units (where their commanders watch them like hawks) or as retired adventurers (although more than a few have met violent ends despite years or decades of retirement).

Someone does not want there to be a new generation of war mages trained, and most war mages seem disinclined to make the attempt.

One of the classes of Praemal.

The War Mage class is found in both the Miniatures Handbook and Complete Arcane.

Many of them worship Mithra.
