Wit's End
Before the coming of Gax, the area surrounding Glangirn was once home to a thriving population of gnomes -- many believe the green dragon brought kobolds to serve her specifically to help stamp out the village of Treeline. Nine years ago, the gnomish adventurer Rubik decided to retire from the adventuring life and brought his extended family and many of their friends to the Barony of Midwood from Durble's Folly.
There, they built an impressive manor house, which Rubik dubbed Wit's End. And then, in short order, they hid the house from prying eyes with permanent illusions. Today, its location is something of a secret -- it is somewhere west or southwest of Foxton on Moss. Outsiders can only find the location of Wit's End by traveling to the end of a leaf-strewn road, where a whitewashed mailbox sits. The gnomes and the outside world communicate, for the most part, by leaving messages in the mailbox. How far the mailbox is from Wit's End itself is unknown.
Each winter, during Ciderfest, the Wit's End gnomes ride into Middleborough, Foxton on Moss and Maidensbridge, distributing cleverly wrought toys and gifts and sharing their cider and other dishes during the holiday. The Wit's End gnomes also celebrate a holiday they call Tootenfest in the spring, which is held on Midwood Green in Foxton on Moss.
The woods around Wit's End are much brighter and friendlier than the rest of the Tulgey Wood, and shallow meandering streams crisscross the gnomish estate. Here, apple trees grow wild and, out of the corner of one's eye, one can spot gnomes fishing in birchbark canoes, although these turn into floating logs or piles of leaves when looked at head-on.
The woods are also home to an unusually high amount of burrowing animals, such as moles, rabbits, badgers and other animals, which are widely assumed to serve as lookouts for the gnomes. The woods are also home to a high number of birds, who are known to burst into a raucous, screaming alarm if a kobold is sighted within a mile of Wit's End.
Rumors also state that the gnomes' genius with clockwork goes beyond toys for children, and that gnomish clockwork guardians and servants roam the halls of Wit's End, but no human and very few dwarves have ever entered Wit's End, and those that have keep the gnomes' secrets for them.
