I cover education, both K-12 and higher education, with a focus on California’s Inland Empire, which includes more than 19 school districts and six universities. Stories primarily appear in the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin (61,699 circulation), San Bernardino Sun (56,456 circulation) and Redlands Daily Facts (6,607 circulation), but I also collaborate on regional, state or national stories with other reporters from the Los Angeles News Group or Digital First Media, our papers’ umbrella organizations. The organization also puts a strong emphasis on social media and preparing for the future media marketplace. I serve on LANG’s Futures Committee to help chart the group’s strategy in that area.

Victorville Daily Press – Victorville, California
Responsible for complete coverage on the 90,000-population city of Hesperia. Stories were distributed between a 23,000-circulation daily and its 20,200-circulation weekly sister paper, the Hesperia Star. Heavy emphasis on education, local government, business, features and breaking news. Served on the paper’s steering committee for social media, live-blogged (on Twitter) government meetings and select breaking news events. Other duties included photography, shooting and editing video and managing the Star’s Facebook page and Twitter feed.

Public Relations Coordinator2001 to 2002
Blizzard EntertainmentIrvine, California
Handled inquiries from the press, Internet sites and the public for leading computer games developer. Work included being the point of contact for Internet fan sites, arranging online and conference call media events, monitoring press coverage, attending trade shows and miscellaneous writing and public relations tasks. Also worked as part of an in-house testing team for Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos.

Selected, edited, packaged and distributed content from contributor Web sites and print articles. Duties included design work, HTML editing, Javascript implementation and some graphics work, notably GIF animation.

Conducted online research, interviewed pop culture and entertainment figures online and by phone, wrote news reports, copy edited and published news on leading Web site. Work also included product development and some site design and maintenance work.

Potomac News – Woodbridge, Virginia
Initiated, researched and wrote features and entertainment news, conducting interviews both in-person and by telephone, and wrote concert and theater reviews for 32,000 circulation daily suburban newspaper. Duties included editing and layout responsibility for a weekly "Cyberspace" page.

Cairo, Egypt
Initiated, researched and wrote news, features, business and sports for Egyptian and American English-language newspapers and magazines, including Al-Ahram Weekly, Egypt Today, International Trade Reporter, The Middle East Times, Sports & Fitness Egypt and the American University in Cairo alumni magazine.

Initiated, researched and reported business, health, arts and entertainment and education news stories for three weekly suburban newspapers: The Arlington Courier, The Great Falls Current and The McLean Providence Journal, combined circulation 48,000. Duties included some photography, layout and copy-editing.

The News Messenger (The News) – Christiansburg, Virginia
Responsible for complete news coverage of the town of Christiansburg and Blacksburg, for a 13,000 circulation thrice-weekly paper. Covered cops/courts, government, features, and breaking news.
