Eyes in the sky: Hitching a ride with NASA’s airborne SOFIA telescope

I think this might be the first time one of my stories has gotten a trailer.

On Jan. 24, Southern California News Group photographer Rachel Luna and I took a flight aboard NASA’s airborne SOFIA observatory. A converted 747, SOFIA is Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy, based at the space agency’s Armstrong Flight Research Center in Palmdale, California.

As a former kid who for years fell asleep at night underneath a NASA Facts poster showing the moons of Jupiter, this was a pretty big-deal story for me.

It took a few weeks for our story to be published: In addition to writing the story and all of its supplemental material, editing the video and culling down all the photos to just the cream of the crop, the website itself is a special one, with a glossary of science terms that slides out when the yellow-highlighted words in the story are clicked, along with other material attached to the story.

You can read the completed piece here.
