Jury summons!

For the first time ever, I’ve received a jury summons. This is what happens when you stop moving constantly!

I’m curious if they’ll end up using me, or if the lawyers will all decide they don’t want a newspaper reporter on the jury. We’ll see on December 11.

What to buy me for Christmas, part 1

Yes, it’s more than a month away, but let’s not wait until the last minute, shall we?

Idea #1: A Virginia Tech garden gnome!

Black widows, again

So, I finally come home to await the registrar of voters posting anything but absentee ballots (even if, you know, they SAY all the precincts have reported in, mysteriously having only as many votes as the absentee votes earlier) and find a black widow the size of a cricket walking along the wall towards my front door.

What in the hell does a black widow that size prey upon? House pets? Small children? Shrunken and slow-moving senior citizens?

And what, exactly, in the ecosystem precipitated mutant poisonous spiders that size?

Ugh, ugh, ugh.

When I move back to Virginia, trading in black widows for fireflies, no one should be surprised.

  • In other news, it looks like the registrar of voters was just waiting for me to go to bed to post what appear to be final results. Sneaky. The final (for now?) story: Hesperia votes.

Sarcoidosis update: Back on the pills

Well, the experiment was an interesting one: My perennial fever spiked and Snap, Crackle and Pop in my joints went from noisy tenants to holding raucous house parties. I also had sharp pain in my left foot, knee and wrist and, most notably, experienced a great deal of stiffness in my left hand. (Last year, my left hand was basically a useless flipper in the mornings prior to going on this regimen of pills.)

So the sarcoidosis is still here.

Sarcoidosis update: Going off the pills

So, I’ve been reading more about sarcoidosis on the Internet, since I’m not having regular doctor visits. And — illustrating the dangers of patients making their way through the maze of conflicting information only — I’ve read that acute sarcoidosis often comes roaring in like a lion, only to slink out like a lamb soon thereafter.

And the question arose in my mind: If I’m taking these pills every day, how will I know if my symptoms are fading?

The answer, then, would be to take some time off from the pills when one of my monthly packs ran out, as it did yesterday.

It’s too soon to know whether the soreness in my left foot and knee and the general noise of my knees and feet are sarcoidosis-related swelling or just an early case of oldmanitis, but I can certainly tell the Prevacid portion of my pill cocktail is the real deal: I’ve got my first case of heartburn in months. It’s not a bad one, but boy, I don’t miss this.

There’s going to be a crazy-long city council meeting tomorrow, so I’d probably be wise to get my prescription refilled prior to then: If I’m going to be sitting in a seat in the council chambers for three or more hours tomorrow, it’d be nice if my knee and ankle were functional by the end of it.
