Gnome-smashing Palm game

Section: Geek

At long last, Astraware has released Hammer Heads, a game in which one smashes garden gnomes.

Obviously, this is an outrage. I’m downloading the demo so that I may play it repeatedly to determine my precise level of outrage.

Joss Whedon off Wonder Woman

(So to speak.)

It’s true: Joss is no longer working on the WW project:

Okay, stay calm and I’ll explain as best I can. It’s pretty complicated, so bear with me. I had a take on the film that, well, nobody liked. Hey, not that complicated.

Let me stress first that everybody at the studio and Silver Pictures were cool and professional. We just saw different movies, and at the price range this kind of movie hangs in, that’s never gonna work. Non-sympatico. It happens all the time. I don’t think any of us expected it to this time, but it did. Everybody knows how long I was taking, what a struggle that script was, and though I felt good about what I was coming up with, it was never gonna be a simple slam-dunk. I like to think it rolled around the rim a little bit, but others may have differing views.

Given how long the script was taking, I think this was kind of inevitable. But hey, now the project can be handed off to Joe Eszterhas!

2006 deadliest year for journalists since 1994

Journalists’ killings, jailings at 10-year high:

The survey by Reporters Without Borders found that 81 journalists were killed last year and more than 140 are behind bars. Iraq was the most deadly, with 39 reporters and 26 other media workers killed. It was the worst year for deaths since 1994.

The group includes some bloggers in the category of journalists.

San Diego Zoo videos

Saturday, we went to the world-famous San Diego Zoo. Here are an excessive number of YouTube videos shot with the non-zooming videocamera on my Treo. They’re all shot silently, so you can watch these at work.

That little smudge up there? A koala.

Flamingos apparently seem exotic in California. (They also had a lot of ordinary ducks, which seems to be the “let’s build a wall around animals who had wandered onto the property” school of zoo design.)

A monkey does … well, not much.

Turtles. Given that this is the most interesting video of the bunch, I’m thinking that the aquarium might be a better choice for camera phone videography than the zoo. (Yes, it’s the most interesting video of the bunch. Sorry.)

A tiger licks the bloody remains of a toddler off the ceiling of his enclosure.

The Alaskan brown bear is famously not interested in becoming a star.

A little red boar.

This once-thought-to-be-extinct peccary was one of my favorite things at the zoo.

A goat in the petting zoo portion of the San Diego Zoo. He’s just happy he’s not getting slapped around by little kids the way the rabbits are.

And finally, the meerkat portion of our program. Enjoy.
