Miami Vice

To be honest, I was never much of a “Miami Vice” fan when it was on TV. Even as a teenager, it was apparent to me that it was trying way too hard and that, frankly, it was all pretty silly.

Well, Michael Mann grew up and his characters put on socks. And in probably an inevitable move, he came back to “Miami Vice.” The film incarnation does not have much of a connection to the television series, for good or for ill, but more of a successor to “Heat,” “Ronin” and “Collateral,” with insanely gorgeous (digital video) cinematography is its biggest asset.

Worth a watch for Michael Mann’s modern film work. It’ll probably just be frustrating for hardcore fans of the television show, though.

The Sopranos – Season 6, Part 1

The bad news is that this is only part of season six, so the payoff to all the plot lines isn’t there, and the set just sort of … ends.

The good news is that there’s been a ton of great set-up for the end of the season and if the payoff is half as good as the set-up, season six, in its entirety, will definitely be a series high water mark.

And it’s not that there aren’t great stories told in this half of the season, either. In particular, Vito finally takes center stage and the Soprano family’s relationship with the New York mob takes several violent twists.

As an incomplete season, this DVD set is unsatisfying in that so many plot threads are left dangling. If this is the kind of thing that will bother you (it seems to bother a lot of people), wait on the next DVD set being released before picking this up.

Clerks 2

This sequel to Kevin Smith’s original film is surprisingly charming, despite two weak leads as the titular clerks.

Whereas the first film was mostly gross-out humor and pop culture references, Smith is older and wiser and his clerks are both feeling the passage of time, which deepens a movie that, at its heart, is still mostly gross-out humor and pop culture references.

This is well worth seeing for fans of Smith’s Jersey films, but hard to recommend to anyone else.

My first jury duty …

Was cancelled.

That was anticlimactic.

What the well-dressed Batman is packing

Want to know what Batman has in his utility belt? (No, make that “want to know anything he’s ever had in his utility belt?”) Batman’s #1 stalker, kainwind, has the list of everything the Dark Knight (and his dorky ex-sidekick Nightwing) ever carried in their utility belts.

Surprisingly, spare rubber nipples for the “Batman & Robin” movie costumes aren’t on the list.
